Ivan Mihaljevic & Side Effects’s third studio album Counterclockwise sounds like a breath of fresh air in the realm of alternative rock.
Album opener “Too Much Is Not Enough” pulls the listener in with drums pulsating drums ala early 90s So-Cal rock, then throws the listener a curve with a slick guitar solo followed up by a punishing bass solo. Mihaljevic’s vocals are familiar yet fresh and he has the ability to hit a wide group of ranges that one would expect from an alternative rock record, his wailing on “Build Your Destiny” calls back to great vocalists of 80’s Metal.
Mihaljevic’s guitar work along with the musicianship from the rest of the Side Effects sounds quite tight throughout the 48-minutes of blistering rock.
Every track on Counterclockwise is abrasive and in your face “Driving Force” bobs along with simple acoustic guitar plucking and exciting vocal harmonies.
“Gilded Cage” brings us right back to the hard rock with crunching guitars and thunderous drums.
The track blends well with the subtle elements of the band.
The ballad is one of the strongest highlights of the records, you can tell the band isn’t droning on in a routine but striving to reach the highs that their talents will allow them.
While Ivan Mihaljevic & Side Effects tend to genre jump frequently they are firmly rooted in the histories of rock ‘n roll and that it showcased no better than on “Eclipse” where hear the return of hair metal guitar lines, vocals that come from a 70sprog-rock jam, the backing drums recall German krautrock to the fullest.
Ivan Mihaljevic & Side Effects are a band with amazing technical skill and they know how to show them track after track.
Their sound is classic yet surprisingly fresh with unique twists on classic and modern rock.
